Audit, On-Page SEO and Technical SEO

Chapter 11 of 25

Three tabs that find problems on a page and explain the fix, plus the full audit report and the HTML vs DOM comparison.

Audit tab

Audit is the fast list. The top row counts Passed, Warnings, Errors and Info. Below that the checks are grouped: crawling and indexation, security, content, page configuration, mobile and social.

Every row shows the check and what was found, such as a missing description or the status of robots.txt. Hover a row to read a tip.

Audit: one line per check, with buttons for the full report and HTML vs DOM.

Full audit report

The report goes deeper than the tab: heading structure, images, schema and social tags, keyword density, search snippet width, content quality, links, crawling, speed, mobile and security headers.

If you typed a primary keyword in On-Page SEO, the report uses it too.

  1. 1Open the Audit tab and click "View audit report". The same button is in the Tools tab as "Full audit report".
  2. 2A full page opens with the summary, the SEO scores and the top 5 fixes. Use the list on the left to jump between sections.
  3. 3Click "Export as PDF" to print it or save it for a client.

On-Page SEO tab

This tab checks what is written on the page, in eight categories: Metadata, Headings, Content, Images, Links, Schema, URL and Social. The meter on top is the On-Page score. Next to it you see the coverage (how many checks could be evaluated) and any critical issues.

Type the keyword this page targets under "Primary keyword" and click "Check keyword". Keyword checks then count in the score. Without a keyword they read Not Evaluated and are left out. The top bar always scores the page without a keyword, so the two numbers can differ.

Link and image checks finish a few seconds after the first result, so the score can move a little. "Re-run checks" reads the page again.

Read a check and fix it

Click a category card to see only its checks, or use the filter row: All, Critical, High, Medium, Low, Passed and Not Evaluated. The search box finds a check by name.

Open any row to see the evidence, where it is on the page, the points it cost, why it matters and how to fix it. Many checks include ready HTML with a Copy button.

Work from Critical down. One critical issue can matter more than ten small ones.

Technical SEO tab

Technical SEO looks at how the page is served, in seven categories: Crawling and indexation, HTTP and security, Canonical, Mobile, Performance, International and Configuration.

It works the same way as On-Page SEO: a score, category cards, filters, search and an opened view for each check.

Some checks show Not Evaluated when the browser cannot read something, for example a file on another host. These are left out of the score. They are not counted as failures.

HTML vs DOM

Search engines read the HTML your server sends first and run scripts later, so important tags should be in the first version. HTML vs DOM compares the two.

Open it from the Audit tab, the Technical SEO tab or the Tools tab. A new page shows how many elements and links scripts changed, and the size of each version.

The Elements tab puts title, description, canonical, robots, links and word counts side by side, each marked Same or changed. Links and Headings do the same for those lists. Source shows the code.

HTML vs DOM: Differences

The Differences tab shows both versions next to each other, line by line. Red is only in the first HTML. Green was added by scripts. Unchanged lines fold away, and "Show everything" opens them.

Use it when a tag you added does not seem to reach search engines, or when a plugin changes your title.

Differences: what scripts changed, line by line.
