Etsy keyword research
Chapter 19 of 25Keyword Tool, Bulk Keyword Tool, Keyword Lists, Rank Checker and the Keyword ideas panel on Etsy.
Web searches are not Etsy searches
Etsy does not give its own search counts to other tools. So we show web searches: an estimate of how often a phrase is searched on the web.
Use them to compare phrases and to see seasons. For Etsy's own figure, look at Marketplace Insights in your Shop Manager.
Keyword Tool
The strip on top gives a plain verdict with an opportunity score. Under it you see four cards: Etsy listings, Web searches/mo with 24 months of bars, Difficulty and Top listings.
Top listings shows the average and median price, average views and favorites, the best shop sales and the typical seller size among the top 100 listings for the search.
Country only changes the web searches shown. Listings are worldwide, so difficulty and opportunity are worldwide too.
- 1In your account, open Etsy, then Keyword Research, then Keyword Tool.
- 2Type what a buyer would search on Etsy. Up to 60 characters.
- 3Pick the country for web searches, or worldwide, and press Research.
Difficulty and Opportunity
Difficulty runs from 0 to 100, from very easy to very hard. It looks at how many listings compete and how strong the sellers at the top are. Web searches do not lower it, so a popular term with millions of listings stays hard.
Opportunity weighs demand against that competition. A term needs both real searches and room to get in. The verdicts are Great opportunity, Solid pick and Hard to rank, plus Low demand, Too broad for one-word terms and Brand name for terms that name a trademark.
Both are estimates to help you choose. Check that the phrase really fits your item before you use it.
Connect your shop and the verdict also tells you if the search fits your shop's size.
Searchers by country
This card shows where the web searches for a term come from, as a share of the worldwide number, for the main Etsy markets. The rest is shown as Other.
Use it to choose your wording and your shipping. A term with most of its searches in the UK may need British spelling. Terms with very few searches show a short note instead, because a split would mean little.
Keyword ideas
Under the results you get ideas taken from the tags of the top listings. Tag uses is how many of those listings use the idea as a tag. A tag many top sellers use clearly fits the search.
Each idea has its own Etsy listings, web searches, 12-month trend, difficulty and opportunity. A dash means we have no number for that exact phrase.
Sort any column, filter the list, copy all keywords or download a CSV. Press the star on a row to save it, or tick several rows and save them together.
Keyword ideas on etsy.com
The Keyword ideas button in the keyword row opens the same kind of list right on Etsy, with two tabs.
From top listings shows the prices and views of the top listings, then tags with their numbers. Click a keyword to search Etsy for it, or press the star to save it.
From Etsy search finds what shoppers type into Etsy's own search box. Type a seed keyword and press Find ideas. Etsy's search box is checked with each letter and number around your seed, about 70 checks in under a minute. Ideas are listed with the most suggested first, and you can filter them, copy them or download a CSV. These ideas stay in your own browser tab. Each run uses one of your daily keyword idea runs.
Bulk Keyword Tool
Each keyword gets Etsy listings, web searches, a 12-month trend, difficulty and opportunity side by side. Copy the list, download a CSV or save the keywords to a list.
- 1Open Keyword Research, then Bulk Keyword Tool.
- 2Paste up to 20 keywords, one per line or separated by commas.
- 3Pick the country and press Check keywords.
Keyword Lists
Press the star on any keyword, here or on Etsy, to save it. Make lists for a product or a season and add a note to any keyword.
Open Keyword Lists to see the numbers for each keyword in a list and download the list as a file. A floating Keyword list button on the Etsy pages shows how many keywords you have saved.
Rank Checker
We go through the first 300 Etsy results for each keyword. Best is the shop's highest position, Page is the Etsy search page it is on, Found is how many of its listings appear, and Results on Etsy shows how crowded the keyword is. Open a row to see the listings.
Results leave out personalization and ads, so they can differ from your own search on Etsy. That gives you a steady number to compare over time.
- 1Open Keyword Research, then Rank Checker.
- 2Type up to 10 keywords, with a comma after each one. Each keyword uses one check.
- 3Choose My shop, or Any shop and type a name or paste a link. Press Analyze.
