How the keyword tool works
Type a search term
Use the words a buyer would type on Etsy, such as personalized coffee mug. Pick the country whose web searches you want to see.
Read competition and demand
Etsy listings shows how many listings compete, web searches/mo shows demand with a 12-month trend, and difficulty sums both up from 0 to 100.
Save the best ideas
Keyword ideas come from the tags of top listings. Press the star on any row to save it to your keyword list, or use Bulk check for up to 20 terms at once.
Numbers come without personalization or ads. Etsy does not publish its own search counts, so demand is shown as web searches.
How to read the numbers
- Etsy listings
- How many active listings Etsy shows for the search term. More listings means more shops you compete with for the same buyers.
- Web searches/mo
- How many times a month people search the term on the web, with the last 24 months as a trend so you can spot seasons, such as gifts that peak before December.
- Difficulty
- A score from 0 to 100 for how hard it is to reach the first page of Etsy search for the term. It weighs how many listings compete and how strong the top listings are, by their views, favorites and shop sales.
- Top listings
- Average and median price, average views and favorites of the top listings, and the sales of the strongest shop among them. Use the price to see what buyers expect to pay.
- Tag uses
- In keyword ideas, how many of the top listings use that idea as one of their 13 tags. Ideas that many top sellers share are the tags buyers and Etsy search connect with the term.
Difficulty bands
Every score falls in one of five bands. A new shop does best with very easy to medium terms, then moves on to harder ones as reviews and sales grow.

- 21 to 40

Why web searches and not Etsy searches
Etsy does not publish how often a term is searched on Etsy, so an exact Etsy search count from any tool is an estimate built on guesses. We show monthly web searches instead: a measured number that moves with buyer interest. Use it to compare terms with each other and to see when demand rises, then use Etsy listings and difficulty to judge the competition.
Turn ideas into tags
Pick ideas with steady web searches and an easy or medium difficulty that describe your item exactly. Etsy gives you 13 tags of up to 20 characters each, so favour two and three word phrases, put the strongest one near the start of your title and run the listing audit when you are done.
Questions about the keyword tool
What the numbers mean and how to use them.
It looks at how many Etsy listings compete for the search term and how strong the top listings are: their views, favorites and how well their shops sell. Few listings and modest top listings mean an easier keyword. Many listings and very popular top listings mean a harder one. The score runs from 0 to 100, from very easy to very hard.
Etsy does not share how many times a term is searched on Etsy, so any tool that shows an exact Etsy search count is guessing. We show how many times the term is searched on the web each month instead. It is a real, measured number and a good sign of buyer interest: terms people search a lot on the web are usually searched a lot on Etsy too.
We read the tags of the top listings for your search term. Tag uses is how many of those listings use the idea as a tag. A tag that many top sellers use is clearly relevant to the search, so it is a strong candidate for your own tags and title.
Look for terms with steady web searches, a difficulty of very easy, easy or medium and a clear match to what you sell. Long, specific phrases such as personalized leather dog collar usually have fewer competing listings than short ones like dog collar, and the buyers who search them know what they want.
